John Calvin on Extent of the atonement
Sufficient for all, efficient for the elect
They who seek to avoid this absurdity, have said that Christ suffered sufficiently for the whole world, but efficiently only for the elect. This solution has commonly prevailed in the schools. Though then I allow that what has been said is true, yet I deny that it is suitable to this passage.
THE POSITION
The one place Calvin addresses the question head-on is his comment on 1 John 2:2, and he does two things there that are usually reported separately. He grants that the schools' formula — sufficient for the whole world, efficient only for the elect — is true, and then denies that it fits this verse, reading John's "whole world" as believers scattered through every nation and saying in as many words that "under the word all or whole, he does not include the reprobate." Elsewhere his language runs the other way without embarrassment: on Mark 14:24 "by the word many he means not a part of the world only, but the whole human race" (Harmony of the Evangelists), and on John 3:16 God "shows himself to be reconciled to the whole world, when he invites all men without exception to the faith of Christ" (Commentary on John, on John 3:16), immediately adding that "faith is not common to all." The tier is contested because scholars genuinely divide on how to hold these together, not because the evidence is thin.
2 He Himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
