STANCE

No — the genuinely saved will certainly persevere

Hence we infer, that there is no danger of their falling away, since the Son of God, who asks that their piety may prove constant, never meets with a refusal.
Institutes III.xxiv.6 (Beveridge trans.)

THE POSITION

The elect cannot finally fall, and the ground is Christ's intercession rather than the believer's constancy: Christ prays for all the elect what he prayed for Peter, that their faith fail not, and 'the Son of God, who asks that their piety may prove constant, never meets with a refusal' (Institutes III.xxiv.6). Visible apostasy is handled by denying that the apostate ever had the thing: such people 'never adhered to Christ with that heartfelt confidence' (III.xxiv.7). Calvin distinguishes a universal outward call from the special call that brings the Spirit of regeneration, and allows that God sometimes enlightens the reprobate for a time (III.xxiv.8).
