John Calvin on the nature of saving faith
Essentially trust that grasps Christ
We shall now have a full definition of faith if we say that it is a firm and sure knowledge of the divine favor toward us, founded on the truth of a free promise in Christ, and revealed to our minds, and sealed on our hearts, by the Holy Spirit.
THE POSITION
Faith is a certainty about God's disposition toward the believer, not a bare crediting of propositions. Calvin builds the definition by elimination in Institutes III.ii.7: knowledge of God's will is not enough, because much of that will is terror; the object must be God's benevolence, held on the ground of a free promise in Christ and sealed by the Spirit. He treats the certainty as belonging to the definition rather than added to it, so a wavering assent is not weak faith but a different thing.
