George Whitefield on Spiritual warfare
Through the usual means of the Christian life: Scripture, prayer, faith and watchfulness, including asking God to deliver the afflicted
"Rather persevere in the use of the holy communion especially, and all other means whatever"
THE POSITION
Satan is a real enemy who works hardest on new converts, through six devices running from despair and presumption to blasphemous thoughts and withdrawing himself to lull them. The answers are Scripture, as Christ answered him with "It is written," persevering in the Lord's Supper and every other means of grace, and watching and praying.
11 in order that Satan should not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.

ABOUT THIS FIGURE
Anglican priest and field preacher of the Evangelical Revival and the First Great Awakening, who crossed the Atlantic seven times and died on his last American tour. Wesley's Oxford companion and, from his 1740 letter answering Free Grace, his public opponent on election — the Calvinist half of the Methodist split, set here beside Wesley and Edwards. This entry rests on that letter and eleven of the sermons printed in the standard selected editions.
