George Whitefield on the Trinity
One substance, three persons, co-equal and co-eternal
From all which passages, it is plain, that the Holy Ghost, is truly and properly God, as well as the Father and the Son.
THE POSITION
The Holy Ghost is "truly and properly God, as well as the Father and the Son," argued from the Spirit being lied to in Acts 5 and from the three heavenly witnesses of 1 John 5:7, and stated in the Prayer Book's own form: what is believed of the glory of the Father is believed of the Son and the Holy Ghost "without any difference or inequality." He argues it because the sermon's claim, that every believer receives the Spirit, depends on who the Spirit is.
3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and withhold some of the proceeds from the land? 4 Did it not belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? How could you conceive such a deed in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God!”
