Irenaeus of Lyons

Against Gnostics who reject Scripture as ambiguous and claim a secret oral wisdom instead, Irenaeus argues Scripture and the public, traceable rule of faith reinforce each other — tradition is the transparent, checkable transmission of what the apostles taught in Scripture, not an independent source of content. He borrows Paul's own language for Scripture's authority directly.

Doesn't discuss a list of Old Testament books — no canon-scope debate appears in his work. What he does defend at length is the inspiration of the Greek (Septuagint) translation itself, retelling the Letter-of-Aristeas legend of seventy independent translators miraculously agreeing word for word, and uses it to defend the LXX's 'virgin' rendering of Isaiah 7:14 against readings drawn from the Hebrew.

WORTH CORRECTING'canon-unsettled' fits, but for a narrower reason than the old summary implied — this is about text-form authority, not an open question about which books belong.

The Demonstration of the Apostolic Preaching opens with one of the clearest pre-Nicene statements of the Father/Son/Spirit structure in the whole patristic corpus — three named 'points' of the rule of faith: the Father, uncreated and maker of all; the Word/Son, through whom all things were made and who became man; and the Holy Spirit, through whom the prophets spoke and who was poured out at Pentecost. No homoousios vocabulary or person/substance apparatus — Word and Wisdom are identified with Son and Spirit through Psalm 33:6 and 1 Corinthians 8:6 rather than later metaphysical categories. The Son's eternity is affirmed narratively: he 'did not then begin to exist, being with the Father from the beginning.'

WORTH CORRECTINGRead 'proto-trinitarian' as precise and structured, not vague — the three-point catechetical shape is exact, just pre-Nicene in vocabulary.

Against Heresies III.16-19 is a sustained refutation of Gnostic separationism — the claim that an impassible 'Christ' descended on the man Jesus at baptism and departed before the crucifixion, so 'Christ' never really suffered. Irenaeus insists relentlessly on one subject: the same Word who was with the Father from the beginning is the one born of Mary, who ate, wept, bled, suffered, and rose. There's no developed two-natures vocabulary or soul/body analysis — the argument is scriptural and narrative, and it's inseparable from his soteriology: only a real, continuous incarnation accomplishes recapitulation.

WORTH CORRECTINGArgued because only a real incarnation reverses Adam's course, not as a free-standing claim about how deity and humanity unite — a reader expecting later metaphysical categories will find rescue-narrative logic instead.

Adam's sin brought death, but Irenaeus's actual argument in Against Heresies IV.37-38 is that man was newly created and therefore necessarily immature, like an infant needing milk before solid food — not created finished-and-perfect then fallen from that perfection. Real free will throughout, given to both angels and men so that the good they attain is earned rather than automatic. Christ's recapitulation — reversing Adam's course point by point, obedient where Adam was disobedient — is the engine of the whole scheme, argued repeatedly across Book III and IV.

WORTH CORRECTINGThe Romans 5 / 1 Corinthians 15 refs anchor the recapitulation theme broadly (III.18, III.22) rather than being quoted directly in the IV.37-38 immaturity argument itself — both are genuinely central to his thought, just not co-located in one passage.

Not located in the chapters read — Against Heresies III, IV.37–38 and V, with the Demonstration of the Apostolic Preaching. Irenaeus's frame is recapitulation: Christ retracing Adam's course point by point, obedient where Adam disobeyed. Within that frame the basis on which God chooses the saved is not a question he stops to answer.

WORTH CORRECTINGHis argument at IV.37–38 — that real freedom is what makes attained good worth anything — points away from an unconditional decree. It is left as a blank rather than read as a stance, because inferring a position on one locus from a figure's argument on a neighbouring one is the move this map refuses. He handles the vessels of Romans 9 elsewhere in Book IV; those chapters were not part of this reading, and a later pass may find a stance here.

Christ fought the devil as man and won: in recapitulating Adam he waged war on the enemy and trampled his head, answering him with Scripture. In Irenaeus's own day the church still drives out evil spirits in Jesus' name, freely, and those cleansed often come to faith and join the church.

WORTH CORRECTINGThe exorcisms are offered as evidence that the church's power is real, set against the magic of his gnostic opponents. They are not presented as a method of the Christian life, and nothing here concerns believers being delivered.

A direct, present-tense, first-person report: Irenaeus says he and others personally hear prophecy and tongues among contemporary believers, not just Scripture cited abstractly. One of the strongest patristic witnesses cited by continuationists for exactly this reason.

WORTH CORRECTINGNot verified this pass. The underlying textual basis is Against Heresies II.22.4 (Christ sanctifying 'every age' including infancy), which is itself genuinely disputed in the scholarly literature as evidence for infant baptism specifically — Book II was outside both research batches this round. Still resting on general knowledge, not a primary-source check.

He states the identification flatly and never explains it. The bread that receives the invocation of God "is no longer common bread"; the cup Christ "has acknowledged... as His own blood" and the bread "He has established as His own body." What he supplies in place of an account of the mode is anti-Gnostic argument running in both directions: the Eucharist proves the flesh is not evil, since Christ's own flesh and blood are given in it; and the resurrection of the flesh proves the Eucharist is real, since if flesh cannot be saved then the bread and cup are not really his body and blood either. The only mechanism he offers is nutritive rather than metaphysical — our bodies are fed by Christ's body and so made incorruptible, as a grain of wheat is fed from the earth. He also frames the rite as the pure oblation of Malachi that replaces Levitical sacrifice.

WORTH CORRECTING"Two realities, earthly and heavenly" names what the Eucharist consists of, not how the two relate, and it supports neither transubstantiation nor its denial: the substance-and-accident question is eight centuries away and he never poses it. The ANF editors say as much at IV.18.4 — asked how the offering is made, "figuratively," "corporally," "mystically," or otherwise, "Irenaeus gives no answer in this place." The flat identification sits elsewhere and is unhedged: "He has acknowledged the cup (which is a part of the creation) as His own blood... and the bread (also a part of the creation) He has established as His own body" — Against Heresies V.2.2 (ANF01).

Chiliast, and polemically so — Book V explicitly attacks contemporaries within the church who allegorize away a literal future earthly reign, meaning the amil-vs-premil argument predates Augustine by two centuries and Irenaeus takes a side deliberately, not by default. The famously vivid material imagery (vines with ten thousand branches, each yielding ten thousand grapes) is reported by Irenaeus as testimony from elders who heard the apostle John, transmitted through Papias — not stated in his own direct voice, though he builds his own argument on it.

WORTH CORRECTINGDistinguish Irenaeus's own polemical voice (V.35.2, against allegorizing) from the reported Papias material (V.33, the vine imagery) when quoting — they're not the same kind of statement.
