Charles Haddon Spurgeon

Preached this directly in 'Inexcusable Irreverence and Ingratitude' (Sermon #2257, on Romans 1:20-21, 1890): general revelation in creation leaves every person without excuse, and the failure is ingratitude and willful suppression rather than missing evidence — true pastoral emphasis rather than philosophical argument.

Searched and not located, across three texts read in full — All of Grace, A Defence of Calvinism, and Baptismal Regeneration (Sermon 573). Spurgeon assumes Scripture's supremacy on every page and argues from it constantly; there is no appeal to tradition or to a teaching office anywhere in the three. What is absent is the programmatic statement this locus asks for — a definition of Scripture's authority set against the alternatives. He never argues the point, because in these texts nobody he is addressing disputes it.

WORTH CORRECTINGDo not read this as Spurgeon having no doctrine of Scripture. He led the Down-Grade Controversy over precisely this question and left the Baptist Union in 1887 rather than concede it. The blank records what three specific texts do and do not contain, not the shape of his convictions — and the distinction is the whole point of recording it rather than filling the cell from his reputation.

The will is in bondage and needs sovereign, effectual grace — not merely wounded or freewill-capable. Argued both exegetically (from Romans 5:6, glossed as leaving no room for any human strength contributing to salvation) and autobiographically: he describes his own pre-conversion will as actively hostile, not merely weak. 'There Is No Difference' (Sermon #2608, Romans 3:22-23) expounds the same universal-guilt logic Paul builds from the 3:10-18 catena.

Grounded explicitly in God's free choice, not foreseen faith — and Spurgeon states the negative case directly, walking through and rejecting the foreseen-faith argument step by step: Christ could not have died for him because of a faith that didn't yet exist when Christ died, and faith itself is traced back to the gift and working of the Spirit rather than standing prior to grace.

Explicit three-part definition — knowledge, assent (belief), and trust — worked through in turn as successive stages, with trust named as the culminating "lifeblood of faith" rather than the whole of it.

Imputed righteousness on a penal-substitutionary ground, not a transformative or infused category. Frames the problem as "how can a just God justify guilty men" and answers that Christ bears the sentence due to the sinner, so that faith — not works — is what is counted for righteousness. Preached this directly from 3:24-26 in 'Justice Vindicated and Righteousness Exemplified' (Sermon #3038): the law convicts and condemns but cannot justify; Christ's active and passive obedience are both credited to the believer.

The classical Reformed sufficient-for-all, efficient-for-the-elect formula (Calvin, Owen) rather than a bare "definite" atonement stated without qualification. Argues at length against universal atonement as internally incoherent, while explicitly refusing to "limit" the merit or sufficiency of Christ's blood, which he holds could have saved infinitely more than the elect had God so willed.

WORTH CORRECTINGThe two halves have to be quoted together or he gets misread as either a bare universalist or a merit-limiting hyper-Calvinist, which he explicitly and pointedly denies being either. The incoherence argument: "If Christ on His cross intended to save every man, then He intended to save those who were lost before He died... To imagine for a moment that He was the Substitute for all the sons of men, and that God, having first punished the Substitute, afterwards punished the sinners themselves, seems to conflict with all my ideas of Divine justice... the most monstrous iniquity." — A Defence of Calvinism

The genuinely saved will certainly persevere, grounded in God's faithfulness rather than the believer's own strength or feelings of dedication. Apparent apostasy in a professing believer is read as evidence of a temporary, never-saving faith rather than a true saint actually losing salvation — the standard Reformed move, stated as the mechanism rather than left implicit.

Reformed Baptist. Faith itself is named as the Spirit's own work, which places the Spirit's operation before the act of believing rather than after it — the monergistic order, stated directly rather than inferred. The will is meanwhile actively hostile prior to grace; he describes his own pre-conversion state as having 'kicked, and struggled against the things of the Spirit,' a Spirit at work on a man not yet indwelt. The rite conveys none of this: baptism is only the outward representation of something the Spirit has already done.

WORTH CORRECTINGUpgraded from established to researched, 2026-08-19. Caveat kept deliberately: Spurgeon never uses the word 'indwelling' in this sermon, and the phrase 'in the man who believes' is by itself ambiguous between regeneration-before-faith and Spirit-at-faith. What settles it toward indwell-regen is the separate, explicit claim that faith is itself the Spirit's work — plus the bondage-of-the-will material researched from All of Grace and A Defence of Calvinism.

Satan is a real and malicious enemy, and every child of God is tempted. Fight him with "It is written," since no weapon tells on him like Scripture, resist him steadfast in the faith, pray to be delivered from the evil one, and fight him when filled with the Spirit. He warns against fearing the devil and against complacency.

Believers only, and the sermon's whole burden is the negative case: baptism confers nothing on an unbeliever and cannot regenerate anyone. Order matters — baptism follows belief, and a man 'holds that he has no right to be baptized until he is saved,' so the credobaptist is by his own practice the best standing protest against baptismal regeneration. Spurgeon concedes that Scripture ascribes a great deal to baptism (he cites Acts 22:16 on washing away sins) and resolves it by sign-for-thing-signified, on the same logic as 'This is my body' said over bread. Preached against the Church of England's baptismal service specifically, at a cost — it broke his relations with the Evangelical Alliance.
