THE POSITION

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (1036) cites Lumen Gentium 48 for its teaching on hell, that the wicked are sent "into the eternal fire, into the outer darkness." Those words are the Catechism's, drawing on Matthew 25 and LG 48.

WHY THERE IS NO QUOTATIONLumen Gentium 48 could not be loaded in full in this pass from vatican.va or two other copies, so the cell is held at established and carries no quotation from the council. A quotation from LG 48 should replace this as soon as it is read.

ABOUT THIS FIGURE

Met in St Peter's Basilica in four autumn sessions, opened by John XXIII and closed under Paul VI. It issued sixteen documents (four constitutions, nine decrees and three declarations) on revelation, the church, the liturgy, ecumenism, religious freedom and the church in the modern world. It set out to renew how the church teaches rather than to define new dogma, and issued no anathemas. The Catholic Church counts it the twenty-first ecumenical council. Quoted from the English translations on vatican.va; the official text is Latin.
